I am currently a Junior in High School and I am starting to look for Colleges/Universities that I really want to go to. I recently went to my School Guidance Counselor to check on how I was doing as of now. She told me that I have a 3.4 Grade Point Average (GPA). At that point I was somewhat concerned because of how low my GPA was. My school's grading scale is very different. It goes up to a 5.3, which is an A+. So, a 3.4 in my school isnt great because of how the system works. But when i transferd it go the standerd College scale it turned out to be a "B" as opposed to a "D", in my school. Do colleges convert your High School GPA to there scale? or do they use the High School's one? The colleges that I am looking at are:
    1. Boston University
    2. Northeastern University
    3. Clark University
    4. Suffolk University
    5. Emerson College
    6. Emmanuel College
    7. Becker College

Could I get into any of these Colleges? or are they all out of reach? are any "safety" schools for me?
I am not looking or even considering going to a Community college/State College or anything along those lines. I want to go to a 4 year, private, College/U/ in Massachusetts. If anyone has any suggestions of colleges in MA that would be a better fit for me, let me know!. I am planning on going to Medical School after college and I am really intrested in Science Major/Premed. If you have any colleges with good science courses or even a premed, that would be helpful also. Does it matter what college you go to in order to go to medical school? or do you just have to take the prereq classes and your all set, either way?

Yes, they do convert, I think they also expect you to report if your school is not on a 4 point scale.

Will this ruin my chances at Northeastern University?

I am going into my junior year. I didn't want the school year to be so stressful so I cut out AP English, and instead took english 100 at a community college. my schedule now is:
    1. english
    2. college algebra with trig.
    3. psychology
    4. chemistry honors
    5. AP stats
    6. u.s. history

should I take another honors class instead? I am planning to self study and take the ap psych. exam, will this be a replacement? my counselor told me english 100 at a community college would be the equivlent of the ap course for credit, but now I feel like my schedule is not rigorous enough for Northeastern even though I took it at the community college. HELP ME!!!

You know what—don't stress about it. You have a very challenging schedule with honors chemistry and AP stats alone. The English may be looked at even more favorably since it will definitely be a college level course and will show you can do college level work. Just work hard and do the best you can, you don't need to work yourself into the ground at your age. Maybe join a school club or some other activity which you might enjoy, as well as show that you are well rounded.

Good luck to you. But if you do have any questions that are seriously bothering you—drop a quick email to admissions at Northeastern explaining they are your #1 choice and what their advice might be.

my desire is to get into a top law school any advice?

Posted by admin on January 9th, 2009 and filed under northeastern junior college | 1 Comment »

Now I want to be a lawyer and even the teachers felt i could really be a good one. I am a senior year and the thing is my gpa is low because i really slacked off in freshman and sophomore year but i decide to work hard junior year and i have high SAT scores. But with money issues i feel like my only way is community college 2 years and then transfering my junior year to colleges like northeastern or suffolk university. Since the fact that i live in the boston area and have no plan of moving away.

But is it possible of one the top 40 law schools like boston college or boston university or harvard to accept someone who did his first 2 years in a community college maintain a 3.5 gpa and then transfer to a private university like northeastern and had a good gpa and lsat scores? I would appreciate any advice from those that have experience in law schools

The law school admission process for most schools is fairly straightforward. It is common for grades to count for 40-50% toward the decision whether to admit, 40-50% for LSAT scores, and the rest toward other factors – letters of recommendation, unusual backgrounds, etc.

Do not worry if you spend the first two years at a community college. As long as you keep your grades high at the community college and at the four year college, you should be OK in that regard for BC or BU.

Harvard might be a different matter. Accepted students at those schools tend to come from very prestigious undergraduate universities and do very well as undergraduates – much higher than a 3.5 gpa. That does not mean you cannot attend Harvard law simply because you attended community college. It probably means that you will need stellar grades and LSAT scores, however.

Check out the official law school admission website http://www.lsac.org/

    Good luck!

Scholarships for First Generation American/College Students (With Polish Heritage)?

Posted by admin on January 8th, 2009 and filed under northeastern junior college | 3 Comments »

I am a junior in high school preparing to apply to colleges. I am thinking about going to Pitt. But my question is about scholarships. Both of my parents were born in Poland and neither did not attend college (graduated at hs school level). They moved to the USA around 1985 where they are not citizens. I was born in the USA. Therefore I believe it makes me a 1st Generation American and a 1st generation college student. What scholarships am I eligible for? I live in Northeastern Pennsylvania if there are any location specific scholarships. Also are there scholarships for 1st generation americans/college student with Polish heritage? Sites would be appreciated.
My apologies, third line down I meant to say where they are NOW us citizens.
Just so you know, I am in the top 25% of my class, National Honor Society, Dual Enrollment, and a 3.75 gpa. It isn't like I am qualified. I just need some financial aid.

I’m not sure about it because each scholarship provider has different rules about it. Maybe you can go to below websites. It’s about scholarships information.
    Good luck

I am a senior in highschool, with a 88 average or a GPA of 3.3. what are my options for college.?

Posted by admin on January 6th, 2009 and filed under northeastern junior college | 3 Comments »

I'm applying to college in the next few months, and I'm afraid of rejection like many of my peers.I would like your opinion on whether or not I even have a chance at any of these schools: clarkson,Albany,Rochester U or IT,UCSD,Northeastern.I would prefer you to be honest.Thank you!here is a little bit of my educational background: I have an 88 average as stated above. My freshman year was hectic because of serious family issues.( mainly my father's death) my grades weren't horrible except with so little time after school I failed to study for japanese and failed that class (this is my only failing grade)Since then my grades have yo-yoed until junior year when i managed to bring most of my academic grades to 90s. I have done fairly well in math- I'm in BC Calc this year having taken AB last year.(Thats why I'm more interested in business schools and engineering.)My sat grade was 1920(im retaking it this fall and have both fingers crossed)I'm taking 3 AP's this year and one honor's class

You could always go to collegeboard and check out the acceptance rates, and statistics for people who have been admitted in the past. You could also go to princetonreview.com, type in your information in the counselor-o-matic section and you would get a list of colleges which you may be able to get into. You could even find out your chances at a specific university.

Seems like you have a good chance at Clarkson. You have a slightly less chance at Northeastern though. Rochester and Albany may be slight reaches though. But you never know–you may be able to get in. Why don't you fill out an application and write a stellar essay. Those essays matter a lot. You might just make it.
