  • College Bound Junior! Curious about admissions.?

Posted by admin on January 14th, 2009 and filed under national junior college | 1 Comment »

Hey guys, I'm a junior who is planning on going to college.
I was wondering if you guys could look at some of my extracurriculars/academics and let me know how I stand. I'm not very college savvy, so any advice is appreciated!
    Academics:
    Straight A's 1st semester
    roughly 3.5/3.6 GPA
    Class Rank 40/776
    Honors in Biology/World History
Participated in Governor's Honors Program 2 years
Lettered in Academics/On Honor Roll (all 3 years)
    Extracurriculars:
    Yearbook Staff (editor)
    Beta Club
    Spanish National Honor Society
    Random:
Went to Greece and Turkey w/ ACIS (school travel organization)
I'll probably begin volunteering at local elem. school/tutoring
    Great at Interviews
    Helped re-open local Community Center/Pool
    Bronze Award in Girl Scouts

I know college's really like community service and Extracurriculars, so any advice on expanding those (or if I have enough!) would totally and completely welcome.
Hahaha Fanpire, thanks for pointing that out. XD. I meant that my entire high school career GPA is roughly around a 3.6 but I just looked at my grades from years past and its more of a 3.8.

If you had Straight A's first semester, wouldn't your GPA be higher? Make sure to get great SAT scores! Since you said you had your bronze award in Girl Scouts, why not try for the gold award? In know in GS you do many community service projects so you may want to get back into that if you've quit. You could try out for a sport your good at, such as track, soccer, swimming, basketball,….

Im currently a junior in college and i wanted to pledge Alpha Kappa Alpha. However, my GPA is only a 2.3.?

Posted by admin on January 12th, 2009 and filed under national junior college | 3 Comments »

I read on the national website that the sorority requires a C+..But im unsure what contitutes a C+..AND when i yahoo search it majority of the schools 2.3 is a C+..I just dont want to got to the informational meeting and know that my GPA isnt high enough and it would basically be a waste….SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY!!!! GREEK MEMEBERS ANSWER ONLY….

I am not a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha but I did join a greek organization in college that required a C+. First you have to look at your schools grading system. For most schools a grade point average of 2.5 = C+
For help with this situation you should refer to your school's student life director, they will be able to direct you to the appropriate people.
However do your best to get your grades up because this Outstanding sorority is known for excellence in the community and education. The minimum GPA is not all that is needed to join the sorority.

How does my resume look for National Merit/College?

Posted by admin on January 9th, 2009 and filed under national junior college | 1 Comment »

I scored a 175 on the PSAT, so I have a fairly solid chance at being a National Merit semi-finalist this year. I’m a junior and I attend a private Catholic school in Oklahoma. I’ve got a weighted GPA of 3.95 (which is my weakness), member of National Honors Society, Key Club and Spanish Club, and have played baseball every year (and will continue to do so.) My goal is to make a 30 on the ACT (I made a 26 or 27 as a freshman, so I think thats possible.)
Do I have the potential to be a National Merit finalist?

Mmm. I don’t know Oklahoma’s stats off the top of my head, but in my area, you needed to be in the 220s or so to be competitive. Spend some time prepping, but don’t drive yourself crazy over it: the distinction’s nice, but your grades and the actual SATs are what matter.

what can i do as a junior in high school to prepare for college?

Posted by admin on January 8th, 2009 and filed under national junior college | 6 Comments »

as in apply to what scholarships now?
what groups to be most active in?

i am currently in the national honors society and do sports and performance arts

    high grades

Have you taken you the ACT yet? That's important as well, if you haven't make you take it and you are happy with your score. Keep up the good grades and if you want to be more active in programs by all means do so. Have you though about doing a foreign exchange program for next summer? That would look great on your transcript and not the mention the experience you would gain from it.

If you know what you want to major in college then you can start looking at scholarships but for most you won't be able to apply for then until you are a senior or have picked the school you are going to attend.

The requirements on scholarships differ for each one you apply for so you want to make sure you pertain to the ones you are applying for. Most will ask have certain GPA, school and major criteria, so make sure you meet the requirements before applying.

    Good Luck!

How tough is it to get into a good college, such as Tufts, Holy Cross, Boston College, Georgetown, etc?

Posted by admin on January 6th, 2009 and filed under national junior college | 7 Comments »

I am a junior in a public high school in the Boston suburbs, and I make mostly As and very few high Bs in my courses. I take all the accelerated courses so far, and my unweighted gpa is 3.8 right now (with the addition of the accelerated courses). I am on the track team, and I do significant community service and am involved in the national honor society. My colleges I am interested in are Tufts, College of the Holy Cross, Boston College, Georgetown, Brown, Northwestern. Any advice, suggestions?

These are all stellar schools with superb academic reputations. You will need to do well on your SATs (2000 or higher) and show some leadership and serious involvement in extracurricular activities.
