  • Can I get into college in Illinois while 17 and without a GED or diploma?

Posted by admin on January 14th, 2009 and filed under illinois junior college | 3 Comments »

I'm in 11th grade and stuck having to take two years of high school (including the current) and classes where I'm not learning anything I didn't already know. My school doesn't seem to offer any way to test out, but I'm the kind of kid who doesn't do homework and then aces tests. I've considered doing a dual-credit program but I'd still be stuck with the same boring high school classes, and the problem with dropping out would be that I'd have to wait until my class graduates and that would be over a year and a half. I've looked into local community colleges, but w/o a GED or High School diploma I wouldn't be able to receive credit for taking classes, so I wouldn't be able to use them to transfer to a university at 18. I'd like to go to a local university and study Computer Science (Programming, Networking, & Security), which I've been learning on my own since Junior High.
Any help or success stories of getting out of the last two years of high school to pursue a greater education?

You may want to consider correspondence courses that would allow you to earn a high school diploma (i.e. first coast academy, the america school). Do a search to find some. If that doesn't work and/or does not appeal to you, try to get a GED regularly. Sometimes the state gov't offers free programs to help people get their GED.

If that does not work, you can consider Job Corp. You get training and your GED and can get a stipend. Do a search on Job Corp to find out more.

    I need a good college…any ideas?

I'm currently at a junior college, who wants to go into the teaching field, as a primary ed. major. Where is a good school that I can attend that is in Illinois?

Illinois State. Or any of the Illinois public universities. Many started out as teachers' colleges and still have that major as the largest in their schools.

Stay in-state, save a lot of money. Stay away from Kansas; those people can't spell.

How to become a dentist in Illinois?

Posted by admin on January 8th, 2009 and filed under illinois junior college | 3 Comments »

Im a junior in highschool in illinois…can anyone please tell me what is the step by step process of becoming a dentist..what colleges? how many years? dental school?

After high school you need a 4 year degree (Bachelors) is usually required. You can major in anything but there are courses that you are required to take such as 1 year of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, as well as Organic Chemistry and Microbiology and other science courses before you get into Dental School.

There are two dental schools in Illinois Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine www.siue.edu/sdm/
and University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry dentistry.uic.edu

What you should do when you get to college:
Join a Pre-dental club. They have knowledge to get you on the right track.

You need to keep your GPA as high as possible in college and your science GPA even higher. Having a 4.0 would be exceptional but that is not all that is required.

Shadowing is very great. Shadow different types of Dentists. The more hours you have the better.

Do community service it always looks good.

Try to get a leadership position or two in a club/organization (maybe the Pre-Dental Club or something else).

Once you've completed Bio I & II, Chem I & II, and Organic Chem I & II study and prepare for your DAT (Dental Admissions Test). This would probably be at the end of your sophomore year of college. Only take it when you are confident as you are only given 3 attempts. (I recommend you take it one time no more than two)

By the time you get into Dental School you will learn the requirements to become a Dentist in your state.

    Good Luck

How can I get scouted onto a Junior A/B hockey team or even a college D3 team? ?

Posted by admin on January 6th, 2009 and filed under illinois junior college | 1 Comment »

I play on a team in a no where town where hockey isn’t everything. The team is called the Kenosha Komets. It is a club hockey team that on play on the high school varsity level of (we have a team for the high school however i chose not to play on this team because they do not do very well at all and i simply found the level of competition in the teams that we play higher and more intense). I know I’m good enough to play on a junior team or even possibly a college division III team. Last year our team went 32-12-4 and we won the Wisconsin state championship and took third place in northern illinois. We had several players move on to play Junior hockey around the country and one moved on to play D3 college so i know it’s possible for me to do but I simply would like to know how to increase my chances of getting onto a higher level team. How can i put myself out there? Any suggestions? This is my senior year so i need to really get myself out there NOW…

If you can’t get teams to scout you, scout them. Find some junior A teams that could use a player like you, put together a highlight reel, and have your coach send it in with a “for your consideration” cover letter. A highlight reel will NOT get you on a team, no matter how good you are, but if you can look impressive on tape, they WILL send a scout to see if you’re the real deal.
